SMALL LAKE AT FOURWAYS SHOPPING MALL

At about 11:00h today, cup final day!, I received a desperate call from Cathy, the owner of the Clapham Club, a night club in the Fourways Shopping Mall, Sandton, Johannesburg:
  • there is smallish feature lake outside their door and their outside patio and entertainment area
  • the aeration fountains in the lake no longer work
  • over the past few weeks there have been some sewerage spills into the feature
  • the stench is unbelievable; last night the club had to close it's windows and doors but many patrons left, the other restaurants situated on the banks of the lake also had to shut doors
  • tonight the Club is hosting a huge Halloween Party, they were in trouble

Man it was Cup Final Day; I could not convince them to change the theme of the party to something like "living amongst the rotting dead" or "dancing with the dead's rotting remains" so:

  • I had no option but to endeavour to bale them out
  • loaded the rubber duck and equipment together with 80 litres of EMgro SAEM and set out for the Lake
  • equipment and helper on hand we arrived at the facility at about 15:30h
  • we spread the EMgro SAEM over about three quarters of the lake, our hose was too short to do the rest
  • patrons of the Virgin Active Gym, who need to walk past the feature to enter and exit the Gym, many if not all stopped to find out what we were putting into the water? They already noticed a huge difference in the smell from the time that they arrived.

I must stress that EMgro SAEM is not a quick fix! What we did today, at a minimal cost, should keep the area free of foul odours a period, but not solve the problem.

EMgro Salad Pole

MY NEWLY PLANTED SALAD POLE
Very top containers (not shown) will have hanging Tomatoes
These containers are planted with, green and red Sweet Peppers, Rocket, Green and Purple Basil, mint basil (just love it) and some chili bushes and coriander.
Here is the parsley and garlic chives
These four containers are each planted with 3 different leaf lettuce's
Half of the bottom container is planted with different coloured spinach plants, the other half with carrots and radishes.
Most of the containers have a few climber bean and cucumber seeds. The beans will rank all over and the cucumbers will hang.
I will be adding a few more containers. Definitely will fill one with Garlic and another with mint; to chase unfriendly insects away. The only thing missing is a Feta Cheese Plant - can't find one anywhere :) can you help?
The pole stands on the step of our patio and takes up very little space. I will be installing a dropper watering system.
Many people are intimidated by the thought of establishing a veggie garden, have limited space available, or like me, find it difficult to garden at ground level because of age or injury. Here is fun, nutritious and money saving idea that can be enjoyed by all.
Picture; filling a container with water and ice - picking your choice bits of Salad from your EMgro Salad Pole, cooling it in the container of iced water, then adding whatever you feel like and enjoying the healthy meal that you have created from scratch!

Coarse of the Jukskei River

The Jukskei River, one of the most important Waterways in Gauteng, South Africa is in dire trouble! The river has its source in the underground waters of the Johannesburg CBD. The main inflows are to be found in the ground waters of Constitutional Hill, the New Town District and in the Smal Street area.
From there it flows down through the Ellis Park, Judith Paarl, Bez Valley and Kensington areas before reaching Bruma Lake. However, on its way it collects runoff water from the entire 'Rocky Ridge, the Southern part of Yeoville, the semi-industrial industrial sites of Ellis Park, Judith Paarl, Bez Valley, Kensington and Rhodes Park etc.' Many of these are densely and low income population areas.
What once was envisaged as an attractive, environmental friendly water playground and recreational spot, The Bruma Lake, has evolved into no less than a 'cesspit of sludge and disease'.
From Bruma the water flows through some beautiful suburbs of Bedfordveiw and into the dams at Galoolies Farm, a recreational an picnic spot. Then down through Alexander and the Schwetla Informal Settlement on to Rivionia and then into the Lonehill Area.
However, just before reaching Lonehill it gathers the runoff from the Pig and Cattle Farm in the Leewkop Prison! Toxic waste flows into the river. Something that the farm manager refuses to accept.
Now the biggest problem/challenge; The Northern Waterworks near Diepsloot that doses the river, 24/7 with huge amounts of phosphates and chlorine!
The river then ends up in Hartebeespoort Dam, probably the most polluted dam in the World. Then after killing the crocodiles in the Kruger Park the water from the Jukskei flows into the Indian Ocean.
